We’re Back!

Welcome back to all the returning students! I hope everyone had a great summer and also an exciting first month back at school. I’m sure there are many of us who are already starting to stress out with midterms right around the corner—if you haven’t had them already—but fear not! MRU’s official book club has returned to give you a retreat to help take your mind off of the trials and tribulations of university.

ATTENTION RETURNING MEMBERS:

If you are receiving this email because you are on the email list from last year, and you would like to continue to receive these emails, then, if you haven’t done so already, please send us a quick email or DM us on Instagram so we know not to remove you from the email list. On the other hand, if you don’t want to be getting emails from us anymore then don’t worry, this will be the last one you’ll receive.

Where Have We Been?

Don’t worry, we’ve been here the whole time, plotting and planning a thrilling semester of book club fun! We would’ve liked to have been together with you all a little sooner but unfortunately there were some delays in getting re-ratified that slowed us down a bit. But nevertheless, we got it figured out and now we’re back!

Clubs Expo!

Unless you managed to completely avoid entering the Lincoln Park building at the beginning of the month between 10 and 2, then you probably noticed that there was a fun little event happening on October 1st and 2nd; the Fall MRU Clubs Expo! Your lovely executives were out there hardly working working hard at convincing all the new students that, yes indeed, MRU has a book club.

It was a blast and we had an awesome turnout. We managed to get an impressive… *checks notes, spits out drink* 110 new students signed up for the email list?! I think that deserves some kind of celebration. Let’s give a warm welcome to all of our new members. I, for one, am so excited for our first meeting! Speaking of which…

First Meeting Info!

It’s official, we have our meeting space and times all figured out! We are going to start having meetings on Thursdays at 5:30 PM after the reading break, so bookmark your calendars! Our first meeting is going to be on Thursday, 24 October at 5:30 PM. That’s 17:30h for all you 24-hour heads out there like myself. And now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the location! We managed to score an extraordinary, exceptional, exclusive, penthouse suite on the top floor of the business building.

All jokes aside, we will officially be meeting in Room EB 3013 which is on the third floor of the Bissett School of Business. Not sure where that is? Don’t worry, me neither. See below for a map of the school to help guide you to the building. Once you’re there we’ll try and have someone around to point you in the right direction.

In Conclusion…

Well that about wraps things up for me today. Thanks for taking like three minutes to read this little letter that took me way too long to write. I can’t wait to see all your lovely faces again in a couple of weeks. I’ll put a little calendar at the end of this letter so you can get an idea of what the month ahead will look like for the ANB squad including events, brunches, that sort of stuff. Oh and also so you can follow along with where we are in the… wait a second… I forgot about…

The Book!

Well of course I had to save the best part for last. Normally when selecting books we, as in all of us, will suggest ideas on what we should read next. Yes that means you get to help decide what book we all get to spend the next month or two reading. Since we haven’t had any meetings yet, your reliable and trustworthy execs have already selected our first book of the semester which will be Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. Here’s a little excerpt from the blurb on Goodreads:

“In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time.”

The book is only 213 pages long so it should be an easy one to keep up with if you’re so inclined. That being said, reading the book is totally optional, so don’t feel pressured to read it, especially if you’re finding yourself too busy with other things or you can’t find a copy of the book.

For our first meeting we are just planning on doing general introductions and giving everyone a chance to join in and get their hands on a copy of the book before we start reading. Therefore, we won’t actually start the book until after our first meeting. Feel free to read ahead if you’d like but please be respectful of the fact that others have not read it yet and many of us do not enjoy spoilers!

That’ll actually do it for me this time. I’ll touch base again in a week to let you know if there are any changes or important updates that you should be aware of. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to send us an email or message us on instagram. We’re happy to help! Other than that, have a great reading break, you’ll hear from us again soon.

Cheers!
